February 2004
By Connie Caudill, Ride Managers Committee Chair
The veterinarian video is in the last days of its final edits and we hope to have it totally completed by the AERC convention. Tom and Cindy Greer of Advent Communications have done an excellent job in the taping and editing of the video. It should be a great tool for any ride manager in explaining to a potential ride vet the duties of a control veterinarian. This video takes the viewer through the vetting procedures step by step, and will hopefully give a clear example of what is expected from a veterinarian during an endurance ride.
This tape is not for the purpose of explaining any of the treatment vetting during an endurance ride or the duties of the head vet such as best condition judging--it is strictly the control veterinarian procedures. If this production goes over well, we may consider producing more of these educational videos expanding on different subject matters.
The video was made possible through funding by AERC through the cooperation of the Ride Managers Committee, Education Committee and the Veterinary Committee.
We feel that it will be a great review for experienced as well as inexperienced ride vets. This may also be a good tool to use in endurance riding clinics across the country as new riders will be able to see how a ride veterinarian goes step by step through the vetting procedure and what he looks for.
This video will be available as a courtesy to all veterinarians. Ride managers can request a copy be sent to a potential new ride veterinarian. Any AERC member may purchase the video for a very nominal fee to cover cost and shipping.
This has been an enormous task for all the committees and we are all very proud of this accomplishment. Our greatest hope is that non-endurance veterinarians will be able to view this tape and will feel they know what is to be expected from them when they agree to work a ride. We are also hoping it will be a tool in attracting some veterinarians to our sport. We hope all of you will have an opportunity to view the tape. We will also have it available on DVD.
