COMPETITIONS COMMITTEE PROPOSAL
100-mile bronze, silver & gold star recognition

By Duane Barnett, DVM, Competitions Committee Chair

The Competitions Committee proposal currently under discussion is an effort to encourage participation in 100-mile rides, mainly aimed at those who have not yet tried 100s or who have only done a couple.

The proposal would be an addition to our current mileage recognition/achievement program.

There would not be any retroactive recognition in the initiation of this proposal. The recognition of these "medallions" will be available to horses not yet having reached the 1000, 2000, or 3000 mile levels. Again this is mainly aimed at getting people to try 100s -- so let's move forward.

-- Horses reaching 1000 miles and having completed two 100-mile rides would receive a bronze star recognition.

-- Horses reaching 2000 miles and having completed four 100-mile rides would receive a silver star recognition.

-- Horses reaching 3000 miles and having completed six 100-mile rides would receive a gold star recognition.

AERC already sends out certificates of recognition when a horse reaches these mileage levels. The bronze/silver/gold star recognition could simply be added onto the certificates.

In addition it is proposed that a listing could be added to the monthly Endurance News, where equine mileage is already recognized, and award recipients will be listed in the yearbook as well. The star notations can also be engraved on the mileage medallions.

It is likely that this proposal will be a motion on the board agenda in San Antonio. Please forward any comments you may have. Thanks.
