CONVENTION NEWS

Convention returns to the Nugget in Sparks

By Michaele Tristram

The AERC convention will be at John Ascuaga's Nugget once again February 23 and 24, 2007. Folks who will be attending the convention and are unfamiliar with the Reno/Sparks/Lake Tahoe area should know what a fabulous area this is for outdoor sports. Lake Tahoe is known for its many excellent ski areas, both downhill and cross-country. The lake itself is beautiful with the surrounding snow-capped peaks.

Close to Tahoe is the staging area for the start of Western States Trail Ride (Tevis Cup) at Robie Park. Nearby is the tiny town of Truckee which offers many fine shops and restaurants.

For fishermen there is the Truckee River that flows through both Reno and Sparks. The Truckee River is a lovely place to walk or ride a bike along its banks.

The Sparks Marina Park offers walking paths, boating, and fine dining with a view of the marina.

For the avid fishermen there is also Pyramid Lake, about 30 miles north of Sparks on the Pyramid Indian Reservation. Pyramid Lake is known for its record-setting cutthroat trout.

Downtown Sparks' charming Victorian Square boasts many shops and restaurants along its period Victorian promenade.

Reno's downtown offers an ice skating rink and a park along the Truckee River, as well as shops and dining along the river. It's Reno's version of the Riverwalk, experienced by convention-goers last year in San Antonio. In the summer, the river is a popular spot for kayakers.

A scenic drive south of town and up the Geiger Grade will bring you to Virginia City, a lively ghost town. But it's still very much alive! Shops, restaurants and museums all await your patronage. And the Delta Saloon right in the middle of town is the site of the start of the Virginia City 100-mile ride every September.

As you leave Virginia City to the south you will pass through the historic Comstock mining district of Gold Hill and Silver City and cross the tracks of the still-active Virginia Truckee Railroad.

Your tour takes you to the State Capitol of Carson City. Carson City offers many attractions: a railroad museum, the State Library, the Nevada State Museum, a tour of historic Victorian houses, the governor's mansion, and State Capitol buildings.

On the way back to Sparks, be sure to stop by Washoe Lake State Park. Washoe Lake State Park is the site of several endurance rides and other horse activities during the year. The park also offers hiking, biking, boating, and bird watching. Day use and overnight camping are both available. So, if you have a little time between all the great offerings at the AERC convention, or are staying in town a few extra days, consider exploring this wonderful mountain/desert area of Northern Nevada.
