TRAILS POST
AERC funds Illinois hydrant, water line

A trail grant from AERC supported the installation of a water line and hydrant at Farmdale Park, near East Peoria, Illinois, at the site of the Endure for the Cure ride. A trench and water line had to be laid from the well at the Army Corps of Engineers maintenance building 900 feet down the hill and under a road to the corner of the parking lot at the park.

This was the tenth year for the Arabian Horse Distance Riding Association's Endure for the Cure ride at the Farmdale Park location. Although there are plenty of stream crossings and water on the trail at the park, for the previous nine years tanks and trucks needed to be arranged to bring water in for the ride camp. This year, though, through the support of the AERC trail grant, the supply of water at the ride camp was greatly facilitated.

The trails at Farmdale Park are multi-use, shared by hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians, so the water supply and hydrant will benefit all users of the park.

The original estimate for the project was $5,000, and the grant was for that amount. However, project manager Christopher T. Power used a competitive bid process and was able to complete the project for $4,100.

The Endure for the Cure ride is a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and its fight against breast cancer. Over 10 years this ride has raised more than $170,000 for the foundation.

For this July's Endure for the Cure ride, 101 riders competed on 122 horses over the three days of endurance, limited distance, competitive trail and driving events.
